Dial-up Networking under - Win 95/98

From the windows 95 startup menu first select 'SETTINGS', then click 'CONTROL PANEL'.
In the CONTROL PANEL window double click the 'ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS' icon.
Now select the 'Windows setup' tab.
Double click the 'communications' option
Check if the 'Dial-Up Networking' icon has a check mark, if it does you can skip the rest of the installation process and go on to the 'Setting Up Dial-Up Networking' section. If there is no check mark then select the Dial-Up Networking option and click the 'OK' button. You will be asked to insert the original windows95 CD-ROM.

Note: you might have to enter the directory name manually, in this case use the browse option to select the directory on the CD-ROM which contains all the .cab files. On the 'Surf-it' CD-ROM this directory is named: \usengl\win95\win95

After the installation procedure has finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. This is required to complete the process.

Setting up Dial-Up Networking under Windows 95

1) From the windows 95 start menu select 'SETTINGS' then click on 'CONTROL PANEL'
2) Double click the 'NETWORK' icon

There should be three network components installed:

1) Client for Microsoft Networks
2) TCP/IP
3) Dial up adapter

3) If you have a stand-alone computer it is advisable to remove any other components. If any of the three necessary network components are not installed they should be installed as follows:

Dial up adapter: From the network window click the following options: Add-Adapter-Add-Microsoft-Dial up adapter-OK
Client for Microsoft Networks: From the network window click the following options: Add-Client-Add-Microsoft-Microsoft networks-OK
TCP/IP: From the network window click the following options: Add-Protocol-Add-Microsoft-TCP/IP-OK

4) Select 'Microsoft Client for Networks' in the network window, and click the 'Properties' button
5) Select the 'Logon and restore network connections' option, and click the 'OK' button. Nothing else should be selected in this screen.
6) Now select 'Dial up adapter' from the networks window and click the 'properties' button.
7) Click the 'Driver type' TAB and select 'Enhanced mode'
8) Click the 'Bindings' TAB and select the TCP/IP option. Now click the 'OK' button

9) Select the 'TCP/IP' option and click the 'Properties' Button.
10) Click the 'IP ADDRESS" TAB and select the 'Obtain IP address automatically' option.
11) Click the 'WINS configuration' TAB and select the 'Disable WINS resolution' option.
12) Click the 'DNS configuration' TAB, and select the 'Disable DNS' option.
13) Click the 'Bindings' TAB and select the 'Client for Microsoft networks' option.
14) Click the 'OK' button.

15) In the network window select the 'Identification' TAB.
16) In the computer field enter your examnr (if you are a student), or your novell login name (if you are a faculty or staff member)
17) In the Workgroup field enter 'FBK'
18) In the computer description field enter 'My PC ' or anything else you like.

Note: It is possible to enter your own descriptions in these fields ,the 'My…….' Are merely suggested as an example, These fields cannot be left empty though ,so a description HAS to be entered.'

19) Click the 'OK' button.

The Dial up networking configuration for SPECTRUM is now complete, The next step is to create an SPECTRUM Dial-Up Networking icon.
