Creating Spectrum icon in dial-up Networking

Before you use this manual....
It is assumed that your modem and Dial-Up Networking have been installed correctly. The settings as they are given here are specifically meant for use with SPECTRUM. Other internet service providers may require different settings.

1) Double click on "My computer"
2) Double click on "Dial-up networking"

3) Click on "Make new Connection"

4) Type in the name for your connection (for instance "SPECTRUM")
5) Select the modem you want to use (anything with "ISDN" in the name is NOT a modem!)
6) Click on "Configure"

7) Set the correct maximum speed (The correct maximum speed is the listed speed of your modem times four.)
8) For a 28k8 or 33k6 modem this is the maximum speed of 115200 DO NOT CLICK ON "Only connect at the speed!"
9) Click on the "Options" tab

10) Clear the check box at "Bring up terminal window before dialing"
11) Clear the check box at "Bring up terminal window after dialing"
12) Click on the "OK" button

13) Click on the "Next" button

14) Type in the SPECTRUM telephone number. This number is dependend on where you try to dial in from.
15) Click on the "Next" button

16) Click on the "Finish" button

The SPECTRUM icon has now been added to Dial-Up Networking

Right-click on the SPECTRUM icon and select "Properties"

17) Click on the "Server Types" tab

18) Remove the marker at "Log on to network"
19) Remove NetBEUI
20) Remove IPX/SPX
21) Click on TCP/IP Settings

22) Leave all settings unchanged and click on the "OK" button
23) Click on "OK" once again

You have returned to the Dial-Up Networking folder

Double click on the SPECTRUM icon to test the connection
Type in your SPECTRUM account name
Click on "save password"
Click on "Connect"

The "Connecting to SPECTRUM" dialog box will appear

Be patient until the modems dials the SPECTRUM telephone number and until a connection is established. After a few seconds you will see the "Connecting to SPECTRUM" dialog box. This will disappear in a couple of seconds. Depending on your version of Windows 95 you will see a "Connected to SPECTRUM: dialog box with some usefull information.

If you have the latest version of Windows 95 (OSR-2) you will see two small computers in the statusbar (on the right hand side). Click twice in the icon to get the same dialog box.

If you want to disconnect from SPECTRUM click on the "Disconnect" button.

The installation of an SPECTRUM icon under Dial-Up Networking is now complete
