| 2) Now double click on the Modems icon.
You will see the screen shown. From this screen you will see that no other modems are
currently installed. If you already have modems installed here, make sure they are the
correct ones for your system. Once you are satisfied you may proceed.

|
3) You are now viewing the Install New Modem wizard
There are two options available :-
Windows NT 4.x will try to auto detect the modem for you. This is the preferred option.
Simply click on Next to allow Windows NT 4.x to perform the auto installation of
your modem. Then proceed directly to step no 7 below.
Otherwise proceed following.
If you wish to manually install your modem click on Don't detect
my modem; I will select it from a list then click on Next

| 4) If you select to do a manual installation of
your modem the following screen will appear. You are presented with a list of modem
manufacturers on the left side of the screen and the particular models from each
manufacturer. You can either select your modem brand on the left and the appropriate model
on the right. If you have a Windows NT 4.x driver disk for your modem, then you have the
option to click on Have Disk to install the updated driver.

| 5) This screen is presented to you when you wish to perform a
manual installation. As most updated modem drivers come on floppy disk all you have to do
is insert the floppy disk into drive A and click on OK. Some disks have different
directories for each operating system. Therefore you would type in a:\winnt4 in the box
below. As stated before it is preferred to let Windows NT 4.x detect the modem for you.

| 6) The screen below is shown when you click on Browse
from the above screen. This lets you search the disk for a modem .inf file. If you browse
a disk that has a .inf file on it, it will appear in the large box on the left hand side
of the screen below. Once the correct file is found and selected then click on OK. 
|
7) If you were smart and let Windows NT 4.x
perform the modem installation from step 3 above you will then see if
Windows NT 4.x can find the modem for you. It will query all available COM ports looking
for a modem. If for some reason no modem is found, make sure all cables are secure and in
the correct place and most importantly make sure the modem is plugged in to the power
supply provided (if external) and turned on. If you are using an internal modem and it is
not detected, you may have a confliction of some sort. In all cases of failure please read
the manual that came with your modem.

| 8) Now if a modem is found the screen below will be seen. You
can now see that Windows NT 4.x is querying the modem to try and determine if it is the
correct type. 
|
| 9) Here we see that Windows NT 4.x has indeed found our modem
correctly. If all is correct click on Next, otherwise click on Change and
follow the prompts. You may notice that Windows NT 4.x may build a driver database before
this screen appears. Don't panic all is well. 
|
| 10) Here we find that Windows NT 4.x has finished configuring
the modem correctly. Now click on Finish to complete this part of the installation. 
|
| 11) You have just about finished installing your
modem. The screen below shows the modem is installed on COM2. Be aware that Windows NT 4.x
may ask for the original cd-rom etc to be inserted during this stage. 
|
| 12) Now click on Properties. This screen
enables you to fine tune your modem a little more. From here you can select a better speed
for your modem. Simply put, you select a speed one level higher than your modem can
support. For example for a 14,400 (14.4k) modem you will select 19200, for a 28,800
(28.8k) and a 33,600 (33.6k) modem you will select 38400. For a 56,000 (56k) modem you
will select 57600 or 115200

| 13) Now click on the Connection tab. This screen
allows you to change various communications settings. As the settings shown are already
set correctly we will move on to the next step. 
|
| 14) Now Click Advanced. This screen allows you to
adjust other modem settings. A general rule is the Use flow control should
be turned on and Hardware (RTS/CTS) should also be selected. This is the
case for about 95% of modems available today. 
|
| 15) Before we proceed too far, below is a screen like the one
on the previous screen but with one change. It has some "Initialisation
Settings" entered in the Extra settings box. NOTE :- This is shown as an example but
should work for most modems. However for now just click on OK to proceed with the
setup without entering any Extra settings. 
|
| 16) If you click on the down arrow to the right of the box
displaying 19200 you will see a screen like the one below. Here you will see some of the
other speeds available. As explained earlier select a speed either one or two levels
higher than your modem speed 
|
| 17) Now click on OK then Dialing Properties and
you will see the screen below. No changes should have to be done here. The only changes
that may need to be done is to enter 91 in the Area code box and to select India
in the box titled I am in. To change this setting simply click on the down
arrow on the right hand side of the box and scroll through the choices to select India.. 
|
| 18) Now click on OK then click on Ports. This
will enable you to fine tune your modem port speed a little more. 
|
| 19) Select COM2 (in this case) then click on Settings.
The settings here are the default settings. 
|
| 20) Now we will select the correct port speed for our current
modem. In this case it is 19,200 baud, however your modem may vary. The earlier examples
will show you how to select the correct speed. Also here we have selected Hardware
Flow Control. 
|
| 21) Click on Advanced and you will see the screen
below. You should not have to change anything here. This screen is mainly for information
only. Click on OK and OK again and you should be back at the Control Panel
Screen. Your modem should now be fully setup. 
|
|
|
